When you reach the edge of the map you can start new chambers on the next row up, and keep going until you run out of space. This is shown In the diagram above there are two melee nursery chambers in the top left row. This is easily accomplished, just destroy one of the columns of two nursery tiles and place fully upgraded speed tiles in their place. In the middle to late stages of the game, you may want to split a chamber into two or more separate chambers in order to have more precise control of pheromone groups.

Only dig what plan to place nursery tiles on immediately, otherwise you will not be able to upgrade them fully. It is up to you.Īs you continue to gain territory, food, upgrades, and maximum capacity for ants it is easy to extend each chamber towards the side of the map by following the pattern indicated in the diagram. The choice of nursery tiles is flexible, put wood ants there if you have them. Now that the storage area and optional worker nursery chamber has been created, proceed to dig the initial tiles of the next row above the bottom row on the left or right as suits your preference, to create a new chamber. Depending on your strategy you may choose not to create any workers. Choose as few or as many as you want but make sure the rectangle ends in a column of 3 tiles. This will provide the necessary upgrade points for bringing all but 2 of each of the last chamber’s tiles in a row to level 3.Īfter you have created a small storage area, optionally create a chamber for workers (green in the diagram). Then designate the tiles of the main lane as speed tiles starting from the bottom and working your way up as needed so that all nursery and storage tiles are adjacent (near) the speed tiles. Once you have formed the main lane, dig up 5 or so storage tiles (yellow in the diagram) left of the bottom of the end of the lane and designate them as storage tiles. This is to give the player the option of retreating the ants into the nurseries and allowing incoming hostiles to attack the queen, bringing her to 75% and activating her special abilities (when upgraded). Note that all expansion takes place below the queen rather than above it. In the diagram above it is indicated by red tiles. This tunnel will form the “main lane” of your base. To achieve this layout from a fresh Formicarium (recommended) start by digging from the queen directly downwards straight through the food placed at the game start. The diagram below shows how this is accomplished: To form the area create a long strip that alternates between two and three vertical tiles. The secret is the use of rectangular areas.

This trade-off allows you to easily expand your territory in thoughtful ways to control the exact number and type of nursery tiles without having chambers running into each other. This guide demonstrates the use of rectangular chambers which allow for upgrading all of the nursery tiles to level 3, except for two tiles.

That is certainly true, but hexagonal chambers are difficult to plan for and expand without running into other chambers. The instructions for the game imply that hexagonal chambers are optimal for leveling up tiles. Each hexagonal tile has six neighbors which contribute to the points required to upgrade to the next level.Īn empty neighbor contributes zero points, a wall contributes one point, while a speed tile or matching tile contributes one, two, or three points depending on its levelĮach set of nursery tiles which are adjacent to each other (all connecting) counts as one “chamber”. To reach level two requires 6 “points” and to reach level 3 requires 12 “points”.

The instructions for the game indicate that a nursery tile may be upgraded up to level three, depending on the contents of its neighbors. While writing this guide, we pick up many pieces of information from several sites for you. In this guide, We try to focus on Empires of the Undergrowth Construct Formicarium Layout.
